She’s Americk-roll (The 1975 x Rick Astley)

Talk about peak.

This was only the third mashup I ever made (I deleted the one I created before it because it sucked), but I have crowned this mashup as my best one. “She’s Americk-roll” was the first mashup I made using the Moises app to line the BPMs of both songs perfectly. Sonically, the two song sounds VERY alike, which is the likely reason I create most of these mashups. “She’s American” is a song by my favorite band, The 1975, off their 2016 album “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it” (probably the most absurd album title I’ve ever heard). When you hear the song, it sounds as if it were ripped straight from the 80’s psychedelic pop-rock scene – which is why it made me think of Rick Astley’s internet sensation, “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

Back in June 2023, when the sky was orange and the air quality was terrible, I was stuck at home twiddling my thumbs. By “twiddling,” I mean “creating,” and by “thumbs,” I mean “mashups.” I had sort of a burst of ideas after storing “Adore Your Second Chance” in my camera roll for so long. I created this mashup on June 12th, 2023, and decided to add something that I normally don’t add to mashups; before the drum opening of “She’s American,” I cut right to the “Rick-Roll,” only to cut right back to “She’s American,” only this time, the image you see in this post appears. I announced this mashup on my Instagram story as the “She’s American Mystery Mashup,” because I wanted to be funny. I ultimately uploaded this mashup on August 4th, 2023.

Another reason I dub this my favorite of my mashups is because of the climax. In most of my mashups, I put both songs’ choruses together. These two choruses sound exquisitely MAGICAL together, especially after speeding the BPM of one of them to match the time of the other. It makes it so hard to tell that “She’s American” is a song from 2016 and not 1987. This mashup is more than just a rick-roll; it’s a masterpiece. An underrated one at that, as it still sits at under 100 views. Do I care how many views it gets? Not really. But I still love it.
