Hotbox In Herre (Nelly x Lil Nas X)

About a month ago, I had a dream in which my apartment (or just a wall in my apartment) was accidentally set on fire. I had been looking into dream interpretations at the time, and I decided to look up what fire dreams could mean. Fire dreams often relate to strong pushes for change, destruction or reconstruction, and a desire to get further in life. That sounds about right in my case. However, this particular dream may have started a butterfly effect that I never would’ve guessed would lead to this.

About a week after this dream, I had been reviewing my favorite songs of 2025. Among them was Lil Nas X’s “HOTBOX,” which released in March. And for some reason, I started hearing the catchy chorus of the song over the very recognizable instrumental of the infamous 2002 Nelly track, “Hot In Herre.” I was skepitcal at first if this mashup worked only in my head, because while the two songs are in the same key, their chords are vastly different.

Well… here we are.

On December 29th, 2025, I had gotten so incredibly bored that I decided to put this mashup idea to the test. I used a YouTube to MP3 converter for both songs and plugged the files into Moises, as per my usual process. “HOTBOX” is a few beats slower than Nelly’s track, so I increased its BPM to match that of “Hot In Herre.” Once I plugged the audio mixes of Nelly’s instrumental and Lil Nas’ vocals into iMovie, my mental mashup became reality.

I had realized that these two songs both contained the word “Hot” in their titles, so I wanted to play around with that theme, with both songs being fun, upbeat (albeit raunchy) songs. All I could think about while making this mashup was “Weird Al” Yankovic’s parody of “Hot In Herre” called “Trash Day.” Afterwards, however, it wasn’t until January 4th, 2026, that it hit me. I remembered my fire dream. Fire. Hot. There was a new meaning to the dream. It may also have to do with the warehouse explosion near my apartment on New Year’s Day, but it all makes sense now.

I had one goal with this mashup: to make it as fun as possible. There are tons of back and forth moments between the two artists to keep the mashup flowing. I also realized that the last lines of both songs’ second verses are iconic, so I had them play at the same time, with Nelly’s “Like girl, I think my butt gettin’ big!” playing at the same time as the loud-whispered “Y’know I got somethin’ big for you, Lil Nas.” I even overlapped the “HOTBOX” bridge with Nelly’s “With a little bit’a…” second after his second chorus. I made no hesitation to make this mashup insane.

So, if you haven’t already, feel free to check out my first mashup of 2026: “Hotbox In Herre!”
