GOOD FEELiNGS AFTER MiDNiGHT (Chappell Roan x Coldplay & Ayra Starr)

My longest mashup gap to date. The time between “Close To Love” and this dance-pop pair-up was over FIVE MONTHS. There are a few reasons for that which I will get into. First, let’s rewind a bit.

At the Pride Festival in New York, something in my gut told me I needed to listen to Chappell Roan. I had only heard her latest single at the time, “Good Luck, Babe!” which I absolutely loved (and still do!). I also had been hearing “HOT TO GO!” all over TikTok, and her popularity seemed to be taking off in a way that I could not imagine. It wasn’t until later in July when I finally took the time to listen to Roan’s album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” And, well…

Oh. My. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You’re telling me I was ten months late to this phenomenal – wait – femininomenal masterpiece?! I was instantly floored by Chappell Roan’s talent, style and aura. Every song hits perfectly in their own ways. AND her producer is Olivia Rodrigo’s producer too??? Wild. For a while I had this album on repeat, to get familiar with each song.

Flash forward to October 4th, 2024. Coldplay released their latest album “Moon Music.” I had never heard a full Coldplay album (sorry Coldplay fans, I’m working on it), so on my leisurely walk, I decided to listen to the new album. I could spend paragraphs on arguing that “feelslikeimfallinginlove” is a modern masterpiece, but I genuinely thought “Moon Music” was a solidly good record. However, one song on the album instantly reminded me of another. “GOOD FEELiNGS” (with Ayra Starr) sounds extremely similar to Chappell Roan’s “After Midnight.”

“No,” I told myself. “No WAY. I am NOT making a mashup. Nuh uh. Not happening.”

November 22nd, 2024. I caved. And it happened. “GOOD FEELiNGS AFTER MiDNiGHT” was born. after over four months, I had made a mashup. And it actually worked out really well. I managed to balance the three singers’ solos throughout the mashup pretty evenly, given that there are two singers on one of the songs this time. I love both songs individually, and putting them together was like the scene in Ratatouille where Remy takes a strawberry and a slice of cheese and eats them together. Chef’s kiss.

I didn’t premiere this mashup until about a month later on December 20th, 2024. For the first and probably only time ever, I set this mashup to premiere at midnight, in congruence with the Chappell Roan song. The reason I held off on this for about a month was because the day after I made the mashup, my dad and I were in a severe car crash that totaled his Toyota Corolla. While neither of us were injured, it was still a scary experience that shook my feelings.

On a happier note, I premiered this mashup as a way to celebrate the end of my Fall semester at college, as well as the end of 2024. I followed up this mashup with a playlist on Spotify called “Cosmic Neon Dance Party,” full of sonic, outer-space-like dance tracks (including the two in this mashup).
