Drag My Pony Down (One Direction x Ginuwine)

Well… I never thought I’d be back. And you never thought I’d be back with something like this.

June 16th, 2025. It was a late night, and I was bored. And you all know what happens when I’m bored. I had been obsessed with the song “Drag Me Down” by One Direction for a while, and I had recently discovered (yeah, I know I’m late) the song “Pony” by Ginuwine after hearing it in the movie Thunderbolts*. So what does my twisted brain do at 10 PM on a Monday night? You guessed it.

Unlike with “Steal My Modern Girl,” I tried my best this time to get all of the 1D members’ solos into this mashup. However, unfortunately, poor Niall Horan has his “Baby, you’re my only reason” and nothing else. With the Ginuwine song, I just let him do his thing. What makes this mashup special compared to my others is that it’s the first time I mashed up two songs in different keys. “Pony” is a semitone higher than “Drag Me Down,” which was not much of a problem at all. All I had to do was raise the pitch of “Drag Me Down” on Moises ever so slightly.

The cover art for this one was challenging. I had no idea what to do. I obviously wanted to take the two album covers for these songs and put them together. So, I decided to have Ginuwine’s album cover fit inside the orange magazine border of the “Made In the A.M.” cover. And to spice things up, I duplicated the One Direction logo and flipped the second one upside down, to represent how unserious this mashup is.

I think it’s the “Pony” of it all that makes this mashup ridiculous. It’s a song full of phallic symbols with a freaky, recognizable beat. “Drag Me Down,” on the other hand, is a motivational hype song. So obviously there is a clear clash here. And this clash makes this mashup my first (and probably only) cursed mashup. It works in the sense that the “Pony” instrumental goes well with anything with a similar beat or tempo, but the fact that it does is mind-boggling. I would say “Enjoy,” but for this one, listen at your own risk.
