Steal My Modern Girl (Bleachers x One Direction)
The world was shaken on October 16th, 2024, when former One Direction star Liam Payne tragically lost his life at his Argentina hotel. I took it upon myself to listen to the band’s hit from 2014, “Night Changes,” as I hadn’t actually heard it before. And I absolutely loved it.
One day in December, I was cleaning my mom’s apartment when I decided to listen to music while I work. I wanted to hear more of what I’d been missing all these years from the world-famous boy band, so I asked my Amazon Alexa to play One Direction. I instantly loved almost all of the songs that played, especially “Gotta Be You,” which is now my favorite One Direction song.
Flash forward to January 2025. It had been nearly two months since I made “GOOD FEELiNGS AFTER MiDNiGHT,” and I was pretty much out of mashup ideas. My mind was focused on school, as the new semester was just starting. However, one night, it occurred to me pretty much how all of my mashups have occurred to me. One Direction’s “Steal My Girl” was playing in my head – alongside Bleachers’ “Modern Girl.” I wasted no hesitation with this one. I got right to work. It’s one thing (no pun intended) to make a mashup using a song with two vocalists – it’s another to make one using a song with five. I had to give the second verse to “Modern Girl” to even things out – so Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson’s solos are unfortunately not in this mashup (although you can briefly hear Liam’s “Alright!” in the background).
Overall, I think this is a pretty fun mashup! I love the first verse where it goes back and forth between Zayn Malik’s opening verse and Jack Antonoff’s “like a heart attack” lines. The “Na, Na, Na, Na, Na-Na” in “Steal My Girl” work perfectly over the “Modern Girl” instrumental as a background vocal. And of course, the Harry Styles solo bridge sounds great over the Devo-inspired instrumental break, and the build-up to both final choruses makes a perfect match. I premiered this mashup on February 7th, 2025, after once again leaving cryptic posts hinting to the mashup. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t have too many views, as One Direction is wildly popular. Oh, well. I’m fine with one mashup having more than 1.7K views.
