Safe and Sound (TV) [Billie Eilish x Taylor Swift, Joy Williams & John Paul White]

Another downer duo. I created this mashup on February 13th, 2024, fittingly on a rainy day. Sonically, these two songs work incredibly well together. That is, the vocals of Swift, Williams and White’s “Safe and Sound (Taylor’s Version)” sound perfect over Eilish’s instrumental of “TV.” The title of this mashup was an obvious one. I couldn’t call it something like “Safe and Sound On TV” because where did the “On” come from?? So, I made the “(TV)” part of the title a double meaning – alluding to “Taylor’s Version” AND the Billie Eilish song. It was simple, but it worked.

I actually announced this mashup on my birthday, not much long after the premiere of “Stephen’s Sky Full of Stars.” When it premiered on March 1st, 2024, I actually received a critique from my cousin on this mashup that I somewhat agree with – the lyrics clash. One song is pretty much a lullaby whereas the other one is a somber reflection of oneself. While I suppose thematically, the songs’ lyrics differ, you could make an argument that this mashup is two sides of a same conflict. “TV” could be the somber, hopeless reaction to the world, whereas “Safe and Sound” could be someone ensuring themselves that they’ll be alright while the world crumbles. Either way, the world is crumbling in both songs, one way or another, which is a reason I decided to mash these songs up.
